At some point, most physical education teachers have had to give up the gym for a concert, rehearsal, assembly, construction, or other school/community activity. I once taught physical education classes outside — in Minnesota — for a full school year (and a month into the next year) when our gymnasium was being renovated.

Four years of college had gone by faster than I could blink my eyes and then I was back in high school — now responsible for the education of students who were only four to seven years younger than me. In a school full of amazing people, I felt isolated. I was finally prioritizing my deep-rooted desire to grow as an educator.

As the new school year begins, I thought we’d experiment with a new look for the PE Update blog. OK, maybe not a “craze,” but this workout combines walking and dancing and can be done by people of all ages and fitness levels. Watch the later segments and you’ll see how group dance walking looks.

We teach at the Ancona School, a small, progressive elementary school in the Hyde Park area of Chicago’s South Side. Each year, our school’s Gone Fishin’ trip combines physical education with outdoor recreation. Why Fishing? Many have never fished before at all.
