Gaining National Recognition status for your physical education teacher education (PETE) and/or health education teacher education (HETE) program begins with accreditation, which is a review of the quality of your educator preparation program(s). Here are three of the more popular paths to accreditation in the higher education setting (requirements are based on your state and university): State-specific accreditation AAQEP (Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation) CAEP (Council
. It has not been a figment of our imagination, or hyperbole that school nurses across the country have been struggling under the cumulative stressors of the pandemic. Our mental health has been impacted during COVID, which is no surprise to any of us, but the data clearly supports our anecdotal experiences. NASN released the results of a national survey in March of 2022.
It’s almost March break and teachers will soon be getting a long-deserved week of rest and recovery. Now, there are those who claim that teachers are overpaid for the amount of time they work and the number of holidays they receive. I, of course, disagree. Teachers are in a highly stressful job – a job in which they’re on-stage, performing in front of an audience, throughout their entire working day.
Teaching PE is a continuous act of making professional judgements about the why(s), how(s) and what(s) of physical education (Quennerstedt, 2019). This is a fundamental but challenging part of a PE teachers job. It requires deep reflection and challenging what we have been encultured to think during our own PE experiences as a child. For many students, physical education is critical to becoming active and developing healthy routines. But how is this possible anymore with the repercussions of the pandemic? Years of COVID-19, social distancing, and virtual learning have all had a profound effect on students, which means educators need to adjust their classes accordingly. The good news is that P.E. can still play a vital role in helping students intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially.
Side-by-side operating rooms for mom and premature baby. It was a made-for-TV moment: a mother in a delivery room having a C-section to rescue her extremely premature daughter, who has a heart tumor that’s larger than the heart itself. The mother is flanked by dozens of doctors, her partner, and a chaplain who is ready to quickly baptize the baby in case she doesn’t survive.

. School is back in full session. We are entering week #3, some of us more, depending on where in the country you live. I am reaching out to ask how you are holding up. What is going well and where do you need support? What are you doing differently this school year? How are you taking a stand for your own well-being? The big question remains, what do we want school nursing to look like in this semi post-pandemic world?
Early Spring in Canada is a time of contrast. Here are some examples that I witnessed this weekend: Canada geese, disappointed after their long flight from the south, circling overhead, searching for open water. But the lakes are still frozen. Later, I saw the same geese walking around on the middle of a lake, honking like crazy. It was probably Mrs.

Physical education is an important part of the development of the whole person: physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. By providing education in movement competency, education on using movement to develop the ability to be self-regulated and motivated, and education through movement to develop ‘habits of mind’ for positive and constructive engagement with others, PE provides a basis for personal and community health and wellbeing.
Welcome back to school everyone! This is my 18th year teaching for Kenowa Hills Public Schools, and I must say, this has been the BEST start to the school year that I have experienced! I feel so blessed to work at KHPS. We have the nicest staff, top notch administrators, wonderful students, and a terrific gymnasium complete with an abundance of equipment for our PE program.
In last week’s post, I detailed the first five principles by which I operate my GCSE PE classrooms. These principles are non-negotiable and form the fundamental basis by which I work. In part 2, I aim to develop these ideas and share with you a complete picture of how I manage my work.
What a difference a year makes. Mateo Ocampo, an outgoing 18-year-old, knows that better than most. Mateo spent his 17th birthday in the hospital as part of his long journey to recovery from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This year, Mateo celebrated his 18th birthday in Mexico with his family, surfing and playing golf. “It felt really good to be in Mexico, because when you first get the diagnosis, you don’t think you’re going to have the opportunity to do those kinds of things anymore,” Mateo sai
It will be five years this coming March since I published my first Op-Ed in the Nursing Economics journal at the invitation of Dr. Donna Nickitas, Dean of Rutgers-Camden Nursing. Since that pivotal publication, one where I shared my personal journey as a gun violence prevention activist, I have had the privilege of collaborating with Dr. Nickitas on many projects, publications, journal articles, and presentations.
Boo hoo. My favourite teams in the NCAA basketball tournament are gone. My alma mater, Wisconsin, was hammered by my second favorite team, Cinderella squad, Davidson. Then on Sunday, Davidson was beaten by Kansas. However, an incident in the Stanford versus Marquette game highlighted a coaching tactic that I really hate. The Stanford coach was ejected for walking onto the floor in order to continue complaining about a referee’s call.

Schools have a lot to cover and only so much time. So should physical education be required? Suppose the big-picture goal of education is to equip students with a robust set of skills and knowledge to live successful lives. In that case, a quality physical education program should be a staple of any comprehensive educational system. Authors Note: In recent years, the larger educational community has explored if any subject should be required, especially at the high school level.
Don’t we all wish our children were more confident? Don’t we wish there was a magic confidence pill, or some special words that we could say to our children that. The post Confidence CANNOT be Given; it Has to be EARNED! appeared first on Changing the Game Project.
Floating kidney resolved with minimally-invasive nephropexy surgery. Sabrina, age 16, is one of those resilient kids who doesn’t tend to let things bother her. Yet when she started having crushing back pain from a rare, hard to diagnose condition, it was a game changer. The pain sent her to the emergency department 10 times within two months, and stumped doctors.
It is barely one month into school and I have already run out of steam. Does anyone else feel this way? I can’t blame it on my age, that would be too easy. What I do know is that there was hope for this year to be less hectic, less traumatic, and less fraught with barriers to health. So far that is not my experience. The frenetic energy of school has ratcheted up to a level that is even more chaotic than last year. .
With Clemens-Gate and the Mitchell report, performance-enhancing drugs are again major headlines in the media. For track coaches like me, the revelations about professional baseball players taking performance enhancers is no surprise at all. Since the Ben Johnson affair, track and field has been labeled as the sport most affected by drugs. Is there abuse in track and field…absolutely.

Stanford Medicine Children’s Health gives kids with advanced pulmonary hypertension another option besides lung transplant. Up until age 9, Hayden from Visalia, California, was unstoppable. Having lost his mother very early on to a hereditary form of severe pulmonary hypertension , he intrinsically knew how important it was to get the most out of every single day.
It is quite remarkable to return to school and the only space where masking is required is my health office. Remarkable in an alarming way, not a “how amazing and fortunate are we” kind of sensation. I have managed to evade COVID for almost three years, but I am not so sure that will continue. It struck me that our only layer of protection left is vaccination and boosters, especially the most recent release of the bivalent COVID vaccine booster. .
I usually don’t go to Super Bowl parties. In my experience, you never really get to watch the game in crowded room – there’s too much chit-chat to concentrate. However, last night, I made an exception. My university women’s track team had a Super Bowl party and invited the coaches. It sounded like fun, but I hedged my bets, saying that I probably wouldn’t stay for the entire game.
I use cylindercising as an instant activity. Students enter the gym and on the screen they see the following: I’ll match up partners as they enter and off they go to retrieve one foam cylinder and an open space. As I filter throughout the.

When Kelly Mahaney, MD , began training to be a neurosurgeon, she was the only woman in her department. She also remembers that, as a medical student, she met a neurosurgeon who told her, “We need more women in neurosurgery.”. “That was absolutely true then and is still true now,” she says. Though roughly half of graduating medical students in the United States are female, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), only 9.3% of neurosurgeons are women.
Once again the power of social media has provided a format to showcase school nursing. I met Will Linendoll , a producer/contributor to GMA and ABC News on Twitter in the midst of the pandemic. We collaborated on a project last school year that featured Holly Giovi, one of the administrators of the School Nursing Facebook page. This year, Will reached out again for another back-to-school piece featuring more school nurses giving important health tips for parents as schools reopen.
The Spotlight Shines On: Nicole Smith. Higher Education Teacher & Star Player. Star high school basketball player, Nicole Smith, differs in many ways. For example, she doesn’t have a storied history. Her rise up through the ranks in Physical Education is a positive example to others. In 1987, she played on the undefeated Tucson, Arizona high school basketball team winning every game including the state championship.
