This is the story of a triple jumper, a hair braid, the Canadian Olympic Trials and an act of kindness by a complete stranger. (“Oh sure, another one of those,” you’re probably saying. Caroline is a track and field athlete, with the emphasis on field. While she’s an excellent middle distance runner, she’s an even better triple jumper. Only 16 years old, Caroline lives in Espanola, a small, northern Ontario paper-processing town of 3000 souls, about an hour outside of the city of Sudbury.

Completely by chance, I just read an article I wrote 10 years ago for PE Digest.com. The article dealt with my New Year’s resolutions from the year 1990, and how well I had performed. I am definitely a pitiful resolution-keeper and in 2007, I find that I’d still get a “D” on my 1990 resolution list. In fact, I may have slipped a bit. For example, I DID look up the word perspicacious, but I’ve since forgotten what it means.
