Physical Literacy: Ecological Dynamics

Drowning in the Shallow

There is increasing political recognition of the importance of physical literacy (PL) in England. It was a critical principle underpinning UK Parliament’s (2021) recent proposal for a ‘national plan for sport, health and wellbeing‘ and the government’s response agreed that it should be an essential focus for physical education (PE) and school sport (DCMS, 2022).

The Relentless School Nurse: A Parent’s Back to School Question for 2022-2023

Relentless School Nurse

I was tagged in this Tweet and when I read the content, my heart rate soared and my mind raced. A school nurse was asked by a parent at her elementary school’s open house if she was trained to respond to COVID, Monkeypox, and an active shooter. I sent the nurse a message to see if she would share her response. In the meantime, I am posting this valid question from the parent.

Injury Excuse Extraordinaire

Physical Education Update

I’ve heard many reasons for injury in my 25 years of coaching. Some were beauties, but the one I heard this week is the best ever. One of my sprinters has been nursing a sore hamstring. When I asked him how he had strained the muscle, his response was that he was playing hockey…video game hockey! That’s right, he pulled a muscle playing a video game.

Reimagine the Role of PE to Reconnect With Your Students

Speaker: Jeremy Kellem, M.Ed. - Educational Strategist, Former Athlete, and CEO/Founder of W.I.N. (We Impact Now, LLC)

For many students, physical education is critical to becoming active and developing healthy routines. But how is this possible anymore with the repercussions of the pandemic? Years of COVID-19, social distancing, and virtual learning have all had a profound effect on students, which means educators need to adjust their classes accordingly. The good news is that P.E. can still play a vital role in helping students intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially.

15-Passenger Van Problems

Physical Education Update

The most dangerous aspect of coaching is travel. School teams are frequently transported by van, often with the coach at the wheel. I’ve been that driver/coach dozens of times, and it can be risky business. Coaches experience an adrenaline crash after competition and must often fight fatigue at the wheel. And being the captain of a vehicle containing other people’s children is an incredible responsibility.

The NFL is a Great Sport Psychology Lab

Physical Education Update

One of the reasons I enjoy sport is that it puts people put into situations of great stress…we then get to observe how they handle the pressure. I experienced a great example of that this weekend, in the NFL playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks. As a graduate of the U. of Wisconsin, I’m a Packer fan, so I was watching this game with great interest.

I was in the minority, with the consensus opinion being that the NFL has better players, so it must be more fun to watch. The discussion went something like this: “Why is the NFL better?”.
