Redundancy and Degeneracy in Teaching for Physical Education (PE)

Reinventing the Game

I find these two words, Redundancy and Degeneracy , keep cropping up in my mind as I explore and delve further into how people adapt to the world they live in to hopefully get a better idea of learning. The words sort of represent a short cut for me to understand much of what is sometimes said about skill acquisition and learning in PE. Probably without giving justice to a proper definition , Redundancy refers to the fail-safes we have in systems to prevent too much reliance on any one process.

June 2021 The Month an Educator Needed

Slow Chat PE

Today June 14, 2021 was the final day of the marathon school year that will forever be known to me as the CoVid Years. To separate the last two years would be like asking what would Pinky be like without Brain? Who would Ben be without Jerry? What would peanut butter do if it had never met chocolate those many years ago? The years will be lumped together forever much like the blizzard years of 2006 and 2007 that created the wildest winter experiences of my childhood.

For many students, physical education is critical to becoming active and developing healthy routines. But how is this possible anymore with the repercussions of the pandemic? Years of COVID-19, social distancing, and virtual learning have all had a profound effect on students, which means educators need to adjust their classes accordingly. Teaching sport in PE: A hybrid TGfU:Game Sense and Sport Education Model - Sport Literacy

Learning Through Sport

Research challenges the directive, technical and textbook discourse of the “physical education method” (Metzler, 2011, p. 173) that the physical education community of practice has traditionally shared. Engaging in this contested space, I did my doctoral study on curriculum and pedagogical innovation for sport teaching, which I termed sport literacy as I theorised sport teaching in PE using multi-literacy theory (Drummond & Pill, 2011; Pill, 2009, 2010).

How Physical Education Plays a Core Role in Student Development

Speaker: Shane Pill PhD, MEd, BEd, LMACHPER, FACHPER - Physical Education and Sports Researcher, Professor, Consultant, and Speaker

Physical education is an important part of the development of the whole person: physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. By providing education in movement competency, education on using movement to develop the ability to be self-regulated and motivated, and education through movement to develop ‘habits of mind’ for positive and constructive engagement with others, PE provides a basis for personal and community health and wellbeing.
