In this article, I share how daily outdoor physicaleducation can be used as an academic and behavioral intervention. An Extension of PE Along the way, I got to thinking about the intervention class as an extension of standards-based physicaleducation rather than just an opportunity for physical activity.
My focus in physicaleducation centers on equity and inclusion in fitness, particularly access to fitness options in underserved communities of color. I wanted to create a space my students could connect to “uncommon-to-them” physical fitness activities, such as yoga, boxing, weight training, cycling, and mountain biking.
At some point, most physicaleducation teachers have had to give up the gym for a concert, rehearsal, assembly, construction, or other school/community activity. I once taught physicaleducation classes outside — in Minnesota — for a full school year (and a month into the next year) when our gymnasium was being renovated.
Physicaleducation electives offer an opportunity for students within a physicaleducation program to select from a wide variety of different course options that suit their goals and interests. And this also comes at a time where physicaleducation has been a hot topic of discussion in schools.
