I am a proud alum of the New York public school system who was nourished and supported by the amazing efforts from teachers, coaches, professors, and community members who guided me. As a child, I was privileged and fortunate to have attended elementary school and middle school in one of New York City’s most diverse districts.

It’s something I’ve faced every day of my life, from being unable to walk until age two, to figuring out how to play sports in elementary school with only one good hand. But my community and teachers taught me a lesson early on: it’s not about what you can’t do. It’s as though I had a stroke in the womb.

When every school across the country went remote in March of 2020, there was a collective spirit around the benefits of physical activity for students. We celebrated the ingenuity of physical education teachers and students to find creative ways to workout at home. Then we went back to school.
