In this article, I share how daily outdoor physical education can be used as an academic and behavioral intervention. Teachers recommended 24 fifth-graders and 24 sixth-graders, who were then split into two groups per grade. We teach at the Ancona School, a small, progressive elementary school in the Hyde Park area of Chicago’s South Side. Each year, our school’s Gone Fishin’ trip combines physical education with outdoor recreation. We found them in the fifth and sixth grade teachers, who happened to be nature lovers (though not anglers).
