In the 1950s and 1960s, classes in physical education were separate for boys and girls. In high school, any girl could be part of a “play day” team where we had mixed girls teams from different schools. Thus, the thrill and pride of playing for our school was missing. But that was unheard of in those days.

After high school, I went to Penn State University to major in health and physical education. We played a mostly varsity team schedule and followed the rules of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), which governed women’s collegiate athletics at that time.
