Two weeks ago, my son TJ’s (#9 above with his senior teammates) high school soccer career came to an end in a state playoff game, culminating a week of highs and lows for me, of beginnings and endings, of joy and pain. All of those things come together in high school sports and that’s why I love them.

As a physical education teacher at Hebron High School in Carrollton, TX, I developed a Health and Wellness Club for our ninth-grade campus as an initiative to reduce obesity and related comorbidities that are associated with sedentary lifestyles and a lack of physical activity. The results were promising: 63.2% learned about the U.S.

at Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C., Too often, when I introduce new sports or fitness activities, my predominantly African American students say, “That’s a white sport.” The bell rings at 9 a.m. and as students slowly file into the gym, curiosity fills the air. Coach Clark always comes with a twist.

My dad was a soccer player in high school and helped found a rec league in our community in East Hampton, CT, which my brother and I both played in. When I started middle school, there was no girls soccer team, and it didn’t occur to me that I wouldn’t be allowed to try out for the boys team — so I did. It’s Official.

Riding For Focus and the Outride Fund are great places to start, as well as checking with your local hospitals/clinics, professional sports teams, and local businesses. Does your school have funding options for equipment? Many schools may have the ability to purchase bikes and skis with district funds.
