In my award application, I wrote about introducing students to new lifetime activities in my, what I think is unique, advanced PE class. I’ll share some of those details in this article, and maybe you’ll find a few ideas for sharing lifetime sports with your students. This plays out in several ways.

My PEteacher took enough personal interest in me to introduce me to the girls basketball coach, telling him that I should go out for the team. In 1983 — my junior year — girls soccer became an official sport at my high school. I didn’t return for the next practice. I had never played basketball and faced a steep learning curve.

It reached a point where I wondered what really I have accomplished in decades of teaching Physical Education (PE) or if I even have been teaching at all. One of my areas of responsibilities is to discuss where PE has taken us over the year with individual teachers in my department.

As a basketball fanatic and coach, I challenge all sports fans and caring community members to take a quick break from March Madness to advocate for one often overlooked part of our education system that is critical to the development of the student athletes who are wowing us during this year’s tournament: physical education.
